Sekian, terima kasih

Salam Syawal 1438H

PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT ON PROPOSED AMENDMENTS TO THE SALESS OF DRUGS AND COSMETICS ACT - COMPULSORY DECLARATION OF PHARMACEUTICAL PRODUCTS PRICES

The Pharmaceutical Services Division is also having another engagement for Compulsory Declaration of Pharmaceutical Products Prices. They require the report to be appropriate and wish to obtain them through various means including report of Landed Price, ex-manufacturer price, wholesale price, retail price and other prices as deemed necessary.

The declaration of prices is voluntary at this moment as stated in the Good Pharmaceutical Trade Practice and it is deemed administrative. Through this administrative process only about 50% of the products in the market have been declared.

More information on the increase can be found at the PSD website. As it is a public engagement they would want members of the public, including pharmacists, to provide response to them and you can do so directly by 4th Jul at their website:

>>> MPS RESPONSE TO THE PROPOSED FEES:

COMMENTS ON PRICES

The margins for prices will be scrutinised especially lower price generics with higher markups when wholesale prices are revealed which does not solve incessant price escalation at manufacturer level. As such we should work on professional fees rather than medicines prices. Proper dispensing and medication counselling are professional services and patients/consumers should be informed/educated on this. It is so obvious Independent Pharmacy cannot continue depend on retailing to survive as IT is taking over business and some professional service processes efficiently adopted by corporatised pharmacy chains. The faster we restructure / reform to develop professional skills using technology as enabler, be less commercial and be recognised as health provider rather than trader so that we can charge a fee. This was sounded decades ago but graduates coming out seem to perpetuate same mindset when pursuing CP and become disillusion and helpless. They should explore other areas in industry and healthcare to avoid crowding especially during glut

Abstract

Objective: This preliminary study aimed to determine the challenges faced by community pharmacists in Malaysia and identify the scope of their survival and future in their business environment. Methodology: The study populations were the community pharmacists in Penang and Kedah, two northern states in Malaysia. A survey was carried out to collect the data on respondent's demography, business profile, challenges and obstacles faced by community pharmacists in business and the future role of community pharmacists in the next five years. Respondents were selected based on convenience. Chi Square test was used to measure the association of categorical variables; independent t-test was carried out for continuous variables; alpha level=0.05. Findings: A total of 103 pharmacists participated in the study. Less than half of the respondents (n=40, 38.8%) felt that franchise pharmacy such as 'Watson Pharmacy' and 'Guardian Pharmacy' do affect their business. More than three-forth (n=81, 78.6%) felt that pharmacists will have their dispensing rights in the near future. From the total number of respondents in town, 44.3% (n=27) agreed that franchise pharmacy had significantly influenced their business while 55.7% (n=34) disagreed with the statement. Both town and suburb pharmacies felt that 'management skill' is the most needed skill in the future for a pharmacist. Half of the chain pharmacy respondents felt that 'counseling' is the most needed skill in the future while 38.8% (n=37) of the independent pharmacy respondents think that management is the most important skill required. Conclusion: The community pharmacists perceived several threats to their future business survival. Among the threats, the major one being the 'dispensing doctors' which are a widely accepted practice in the country.

NATURAL DOES NOT MEAN IT IS SAFE

Emilya has just returned home from the faculty. She is worried. During the class, several of her friends pointed out that she had a pimple on her chin. Even her best friend mocked her oily and dark skin. She begins searching on the internet for products that can eliminate her pimple and improve her skin condition. An advertisement caught her eye.

"Made from 100% natural products, no side effects"

Situations like this happen in our daily life. In the fast moving modern world, information regarding health can be easily obtained. Sellers are now more creative in using the technological advances in selling their products.

The term natural medicine or natural product is frequently used by sellers to promote their products. From public perceptive, it would be illogical for a product derived from natural sources could harm them. Therefore, those who seek for alternatives in treating their diseases or conditions will be influenced by such products.

MALAYSIAN PHARMACY STUDENTS' ASSOCIATION (MYPSA): AN INTRODUCTION

The Malaysian Pharmacy Students' Association (MyPSA) was established in 2006 as a non-profitable, non-political and non-religious organization under the umbrella of the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society. As the student chapter of the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society (MPS), MyPSA plays a critical role in executing various activities for pharmacy students in Malaysia in line with its tagline, "Towards Pharmaceutical Excellence". The establishment of MyPSA back in 2006 had greatly impacted the life of pharmacy students today as it sets out crystal-clear objectives to discuss and to reinforce the concerns and roles of pharmacy students in the nation.
