ANTICOAGULANT CARE 3.0 - The New Standard in Anticoagulation Care

Anticoagulation is the key treatment in many thrombotic diseases including Ischaemic Stroke, Atrial Fibrillation and Deep Vein Thrombosis. Vitamin K antagonists like Heparin and Warfarin have been predominantly used in the market for the past 60 years, however, the emerging roles of Novel Oral Anticoagulants (NOAC) successfully changed the scenario in the last 10 years, offering potential advantages through a different pathway in anticoagulation care.

How do we address the necessity of anticoagulation reversal among patients who require emergency surgery or treatment following traumatic events? How should we go beyond the extra mile to ensure normal hemostasis among patients receiving anticoagulation therapy regardless of their situations?

With more than 21 years of experience in Cardiology, Prof. Dr. Imran Bin Zainal Abidin, Senior Consultant Cardiologist from University of Malaya Medical Centre is ready to share with us his professional viewpoints on escalating anticoagulation care with new standards in place. HIGHLIGHT OF TOPICS

Diagnosis and Management of Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria

Chronic spontaneous urticaria, defined as persistent urticaria lasted for at least 6 weeks, has a great impact towards the quality of life, especially in terms of sleep deprivation and psychiatric comorbidity. With its prevalence ranging from 0.5 to 1.0% of the worldwide population, it largely affects patients' social function as well as causing increased burden on both direct and indirect healthcare costs.

Acknowledging the fact that chronic spontaneous urticaria has large unmet needs in clinical treatment, it is essential for pharmacists as healthcare providers to get equipped with the knowledge of diagnosis and treatment as a practical measure to address the issue. Dr. Khor Yek Huan, Consultant Dermatologist from Penang Hospital, is undoubtedly one of the best speakers to share with us his professional insights on the issue.

If you agree that learning more about chronic spontaneous urticaria is essential in your daily practice, don't miss the chance to learn with us at the MPS 50th Anniversary Seminar from 12-14 May 2017! AFTER B. PHARM - DO YOU NEED TO WORK AS A PHARMACIST?

Actually BPharm is a useful degree even if you opt out not practising professionally especially if you are interested in pharmaceutical business, healthcare management where you have no direct contact with patients. In any case our current law does not define pharmacy practice other than you need a Type A Licence to be employed as professional pharmacist in community, clinical setting, in industry to hold poison license (only 1 required!), in production - the rest no need Type A licence. The only thing is would you be paid a premium if you are a registered pharmacist? I would opt for a MBA or other Postgraduate degree if I want to pursue a non Type A job and would perhaps enjoy better career growth and other opportunities!

Hence, pharmacy is a career with many options and would still be in demand, so I tell parents . Really, one's success is less of the degree but more of how you move on from there in life! Thus we see different type of pharmacists - one that curse and swear there is no future, one that says no regrets, can survive; third who thank himself for taking up pharmacy which gives him great opportunities either within the profession or outside but who in any case would succeed anyhow due to personal effort and ambition.

And yes, for those of us who continue to renew our APC let us protect our pharmacy franchise like any franchisor would and crucify those who infringe the practice regulations. Don't give chance, for too long tolerating and whining, time for action. But please raise your hand if you would like to lead the charge. If we are a matured and dignified profession we should never feel helpless; we need to help ourselves by organising and strategising simply because our future and success depend on how we manage our profession, not let others managing us. While I feel encourage and optimistic from conversations here but our challenge is how we organise ourselves to meet the challenges that we have correctly identified but we need follow up and action.
