PHARMACISTS HAVE TO WORK TOGETHER AND NOW IS THE TIME
Over the last 10 years it is estimated that 800×10 = 8000 young registered pharmacists to make up to the 15,000 registered pharmacists today, and expected to rise further. One would expect these young, enthusiastic, energetic group to form the more visible practitioners facing patients on daily basis creating the impact and impression on the image of the profession. While we are seeing promising individuals coming forward wanting to serve, there are many who cannot or can't be bothered to find out or don't want to see the importance and role of a professional body in championing their interests. They see themselves as individuals and not part of a professional institution that is impacted by the socioe-conomic and political factors influencing their daily practice.
It is amazing how an intelligent person chose and trained to be a pharmacist can ignore or not supporting his/her professional body that is actively pursuing to uphold the profession. They feel comfortable that while 4000 have realised such importance and paying the subscription or become life members, and perhaps they benefiting from the contribution of the Society and its members, they still plead ignorance and asked what have the Society done? As long we have such significant numbers still not being members, the profession will continue to face uphill task because they cannot be reached as they are not interested in the Society, professional unity and strength or its political struggle.
Fortunately we still have diehards within the profession never give up continue to serve and are keeping the Society relevant. Let us take full advantage of our 50th anniversary to bring solidarity and unity within the profession reminding us that our professional struggle is a never ending journey as we develop and evolve to become a truly global healthcare profession that is becoming more relevant in a healthcare system focussing on wellness and prevention, and on safety and better patient outcome.
We now have a strong MyPSA and YPC. We are indeed in an exciting profession that is relevant to both healthy and sick patients. Let us show the doctors and convince regulators that we can work together as a team to serve the people. If we failed to do so, blame not others but ourselves because we failed to use our capability coming forward to volunteer and serve working in unity. We have set the momentum and must make use of it to permanently structure our institution, Area Committees, Chapters, and Interest Groups to pursue our noble objectives beyond the 50th anniversary celebration. We must not lose more time, and this is the right time!

HIGHLIGHT OF TOPICS:
(from the MPS Media & Publicity Chapter)
THE ROLE OF COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE INPHARMACY TODAY
The demand for complementary medicine, especially herbal medicines and nutritional supplements, is increasing worldwide. In fact, it is not a surprise when herbal medicines and nutritional supplements are deemed to be the most common items sold in community pharmacies.
Nevertheless, are we, pharmacists, ready to place complementary medicine in good custody? How do we ensure quality advice is given to warrant safe and efficacious use of complementary medicine alongside with conventional treatment?
Mr. Bobby Mehta, chief pharmacist for the UFS Dispensaries Ltd in Australia, will be sharing his perspectives on complementary medicine in pharmacy, as well as guiding us on the use of evidence-based resources pertaining to complementary medicine.
If you agree that being a pharmacist, knowing more about complementary medicine could assist you better in your daily practice, then join us at the MPS 50th Anniversary Seminar from 12-14 May 2017!
CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS : SELECTION OF AN ANTIDIABETIC AGENT
Diabetes Mellitus is a serious global pandemic, affecting more than 422 million people worldwide. Our country, Malaysia, topped among Southeast Asian countries in terms of prevalence of Diabetes Mellitus, with at least 16.7% of total Malaysian population is affected. Keeping in mind that this is a long-term battle, which might come along with serious macro- and microvascular complications that are potentially damaging to our target organs, careful selection of an antidiabetic agent is a must.
How do we tailor pharmacotherapy to our diabetic patients? What are the clinical determinants that need to be taken into account? Based on her vast knowledge and experience in the field, we are honoured to invite Dr. Fatimah Zaherah Binti Mohamed Shah, the renowned endocrinologist from Hospital Sungai Buloh, to broaden our knowledge on the issues above.
If you agree that careful selection of an antidiabetic agent is crucial, then join us at the MPS 50th Anniversary Seminar from 12-14 May 2017
BREAKING THROUGH THE RECOGNITION BARRIER - FROM AN ADVISORY ROLE TO A RESPONSIBILITY BEARING ROLE
The emerging roles of pharmacists are well-portrayed by the evolving changes in pharmacy practice - a paradigm shift from compounding and supply of medicines to the proactive involvement of patients' wellbeing through pharmaceutical care. However, behind the unleashed potentials of pharmacists, how well are we being recognized by the healthcare team? What are the possible attributes behind the recognition barrier, and how are we breaking through it?
Professor Datuk Dr. Allan Matthews, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy in the Quest International University, Perak, will be joining us at the 50th MPS Anniversary Seminar to share his professional insights on the issue. Based on his rich experience including hospital pharmacy, the pharmaceutical industry and now the academia of pharmacy, Professor Datuk Dr. Allan Matthews is certainly one of the best candidates to show us the path towards overcoming the recognition barrier of a pharmacist.
If you agree that being recognized is something important in your career, you should have no reason to miss this enlightening session! Join us at the MPS 50th Anniversary Seminar from 12-14 May 2017!

This poem was read during the Perak Area AGM celebration of the MPS 50th Anniversary

A Poem Dedication on the occasion of 50th Anniversary Celebration of MPS
Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society,
A society for the Pharmacists of the nation.
And as how I recall my first lecture in University,
The Introduction to Pharmacy,
Pharmacy is the only profession,
Where there are ten different fields that you can choose to practice,
To name a few,
Academy of Pharmacy,
From the very beginning of our profession's journey,
The society represents us,
MyPSA for the students,
YPC, for the budding young pharmacists,
And, we have various chapters to represent each different field.
Now, as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary this year,
Let us all, the Pharmacists of our nation take the pledge,
Pledge to render our endless support to our Society.
For, it is with our support, that MPS will be able to do more for us.
And as how our President says it, "Together, let us move onwards and upwards.
Joanna Selvi Reneeraj,
Life Member of MPS,
Perak Area Committee.

"From research to health care: Your pharmacist is at your service" is the theme of this year's World Pharmacists Day.
"This theme was chosen to reflect the numerous contributions the pharmacy profession makes to health. From research and development of medicines, to educating future pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, and providing direct care, we do all this in the service of our patients and communities," said FIP President Dr Carmen Peña.
Watch the Campaign Animation from FIP:
>>> Click here to download
"We want to emphasise that pharmacists are the backbone of health care in many different settings. But providing care does not begin in community or hospital pharmacies. Taking care of patients starts with recognising the health issues of populations and developing medicines, policies and education to tackle them. We pharmacists are often there at the very beginning of the process ? when the first molecule that effectively treats a disease is identified," Dr Peña added.
World Pharmacists Day is used by FIP's members and others around the globe to highlight the value of the pharmacy profession and impact on improving health to authorities, other professions and the media, as well as to the general public. FIP has produced resources for this year's campaign in the six official United Nations languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. These include an animation and other materials for print and social media.
FIP is inviting pharmacists to support World Pharmacists Day by creating profile pictures for their social media accounts using the official FIP Twibbon or a specially designed "Your pharmacist is at your service" placard. The resources are all free to use and available below.
