HIGHLIGHT OF TOPICS:
THE ROLE OF COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE INPHARMACY TODAY
The demand for complementary medicine, especially herbal medicines and nutritional supplements, is increasing worldwide. In fact, it is not a surprise when herbal medicines and nutritional supplements are deemed to be the most common items sold in community pharmacies.
Nevertheless, are we, pharmacists, ready to place complementary medicine in good custody? How do we ensure quality advice is given to warrant safe and efficacious use of complementary medicine alongside with conventional treatment?
Mr. Bobby Mehta, chief pharmacist for the UFS Dispensaries Ltd in Australia, will be sharing his perspectives on complementary medicine in pharmacy, as well as guiding us on the use of evidence-based resources pertaining to complementary medicine.
If you agree that being a pharmacist, knowing more about complementary medicine could assist you better in your daily practice, then join us at the MPS 50th Anniversary Seminar from 12-14 May 2017!
HOSPITAL PHARMACY PRACTICE & PHARMACIST DEVELOPMENT-EXPERIENCES & THE CHANGE FOR THE FUTURE
The evolving changes in hospital pharmacy practice signify a paradigm shift of pharmacist's role in hospital pharmacy - from compounding and supply of drugs to the specialization and proactive involvement of patient-centered care. What are the chances of development offered to a pharmacist following such a change, and how well are we bracing ourselves to change for the future?
Dr. Camilla Wong, Director, Sengkang Health Singapore, is ready to share her professional views and experiences on the issue. With more than 20 years of dedication and experience in hospital pharmacy, she is undoubtedly an eminent speaker who is ready to broaden our views and perceptions towards the past, present and future of hospital pharmacy practice.
If you agree that this is going to be an inspiring and insightful lecture for you, never miss the chance to join the MPS 50th Anniversary Seminar from 12-14 May 2017!
IDENTIFY OAB IN LOWER URINARY TRACT SYMPTOMS PATIENTS
Overactive bladder, characterized by frequent and urgent urination with some incontinence all the time is one of the major disturbances in our daily lives affecting at least 500 million people worldwide. A published report depicting estimated global prevalence of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (LUTS) highlighted Asia as the region with the largest burden of overactive bladder, expecting an increment of 22.1% from the year 2008 to 2018.
In fact, studies have also proven that overactive bladder has a multi-dimensional impact on quality of life, predominantly affecting physical, social and psychological aspects of patients' lives. Upon understanding the phenomenon, how do we as healthcare professionals assist in identifying and addressing the problem?
Dr. Peter Ng, Consultant Urological Surgeon at Ramsay Sime Darby Medical Centre, Subang Jaya as well as the Puchong Medical Specialist Clinic, is ready to convey his message on addressing the issue of the overactive bladder at the MPS 50th Anniversary Seminar. Do not miss the chance to join us from 12-14 May 2017. Register today!

MESSAGE FROM RESEARCHERS IN MONASH UNIVERSITY
Dear community pharmacists,
We would like to kindly request your assistance in taking part in this survey on the communication issues you face when dealing with patients who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing in the community pharmacy. Research has shown that these patients face a lot of communication barriers while trying to seek information and treatment from community pharmacists, and this has led to them either using their medications incorrectly thus experiencing side effects and a lack of efficacy, or not going to seek care altogether. Thus with this survey we hope to be able to identify the barriers to communication and use the findings to develop methods to overcome this, as well as provide better services to the hearing impaired community.
The survey will only take 5-10 minutes of your time, therefore we would truly appreciate if you could give us your feedback. If you are practising in Selangor, KL, Perak, Penang or Johor,
>>> Click here to access the survey
Thank you for your help.
"From research to health care: Your pharmacist is at your service" is the theme of this year's World Pharmacists Day.
"This theme was chosen to reflect the numerous contributions the pharmacy profession makes to health. From research and development of medicines, to educating future pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, and providing direct care, we do all this in the service of our patients and communities," said FIP President Dr Carmen Peña.

"We want to emphasise that pharmacists are the backbone of health care in many different settings. But providing care does not begin in community or hospital pharmacies. Taking care of patients starts with recognising the health issues of populations and developing medicines, policies and education to tackle them. We pharmacists are often there at the very beginning of the process ? when the first molecule that effectively treats a disease is identified," Dr Peña added.
World Pharmacists Day is used by FIP's members and others around the globe to highlight the value of the pharmacy profession and impact on improving health to authorities, other professions and the media, as well as to the general public. FIP has produced resources for this year's campaign in the six official United Nations languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. These include an animation and other materials for print and social media.
FIP is inviting pharmacists to support World Pharmacists Day by creating profile pictures for their social media accounts using the official FIP Twibbon or a specially designed "Your pharmacist is at your service" placard. The resources are all free to use and available below.
