The Commonwealth Pharmacists Association (CPA) and the peak national body for pharmacists in Australia, the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia (PSA), has called for abstracts for PSA17.

Selected abstracts will be presented as part of the 'Pioneering Clinical Practice and Research' stream and/or as a poster with influential academic leaders. Prizes will be awarded for the best oral presentation and poster.

The CPA president, Mr Raymond Anderson said "PSA17 will provide a global platform to showcase evidence created by pharmacists from around the Commonwealth. It will offer high level networking opportunities and present great potential for international collaboration and joint working."

PSA National President Joe Demarte said "PSA17 is the ideal platform to network with pharmacists and pharmacy owners as potential subjects for research. The conference schedule features a high ratio of oral presentations, so when you submit an abstract you have a great chance to boost your profile with a wide audience."

The conference will be held at the newly refurbished Hyatt Regency Sydney from July 28?30, 2017. More than 50 presenters will address the conference theme of Leading Pharmacy Innovation, including local and international experts.

Regulatory Matters

  • Olanzapine: Risk of Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS)
The antipsychotic drug olanzapine has been associated with the risk of DRESS. If DRESS is suspected, stop treatment with olanzapine. Advise patients taking olanzapine to seek medical attention if they experience fever, rash, swollen lymph glands, or face swelling.
  • Codeine: Risk of respiratory depression
Codeine-containing medicines can lead to respiratory problems in sensitive patients. Codeine is now contraindicated in the following patient groups:
    • Children aged below 12 years for the symptomatic treatment of colds.
    • All pediatric patients (0 to 18 years of age) who undergo tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome.
    • Women who are breastfeeding.
    • Patients who are known CYP2D6 ultra-rapid metabolizers.
  • Warfarin: Rare cases of calciphylaxis
Rare cases of calciphylaxis have been reported in patients on warfarin therapy. Although many of the cases reported pre-existing renal disease, some noted normal renal function. If calciphylaxis is diagnosed, appropriate treatment should be started and consideration should be given to stopping warfarin treatment.
  • Advice on the risk of lower limb amputation during treatment with Invokana® (canagliflozin)
Canagliflozin has been linked with a possible risk of increased lower limb amputations. This risk is still under evaluation. Counselling: Emphasis the importance of routine foot care, and advise patients to seek medical attention if they experience pain, soreness, discolouration, ulceration or infections of their legs or feet. Patients should be educated on the signs and symptoms of volume depletion, and advised to always remain hydrated.
  • List of Direct Healthcare Professional Communication (DHPC) letters for 2016
Direct Healthcare Professional Communication (DHPC) letters are issued by product registration holders with the approval of NPRA, to disseminate information on particularly important safety issues or changes in product prescribing information.

What's New?

  • Malaysian Pharmacovigilance Guidelines (2nd Edition) & Vaccine Pharmacovigilance Guidelines (2nd Edition)

Understand antibiotic resistance, and how antimicrobial stewardship can slow down or reduce it, with this free online course.

Why join the course?

The World Health Organisation (WHO), when reporting on the escalating threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), warned that without urgent action, we're heading for an era in which common infections, which have been treatable with antibiotics for decades, can kill once more. In some parts of the world, this sadly is already a reality.

Find out more what will you achieve

Certificate will given to Malaysian for free upon completion. The certificate originally cost 39 pounds + shipping. Certificate shows your name, your course, the logo of the organisation offering it, plus any professional associations endorsing it, and the lead educator's signature.
