Prita Nambbiar, (3rd Year Pharmacy) was recently awarded the Best English Debater for the year 2003 by the Malaysian Universities? Debating Council (Majlis Debat Universiti-universiti Malaysia (MADUM). Popularly known in debating circles as the Anugerah Madum, the award was a recognition of outstanding individual performance in debating tournaments held throughout 2003.
Having been missing in action from the local debating scene for a couple of years, USM finally made a comeback towards the end of 2002, forming team USM 1 practically from scratch. The team comprised Eugene Ray Martin (2nd year Biomedicine), Prita (3rd year Pharmacy) and Lim Fung Kit (3rd year Civil Engineering). Team USM 1 went on to actively participate in the 2003 Malaysian Debating League?s series of tournaments, hosted by various local universities.
Among these tourneys were the Malaysian Multimedia University Open, Universiti Putra Malaysia?s Great Serdang Debate, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia?s Pre-Asians Invitational Tournament and the Royal Intervarsity Debating Championships (Debat Diraja) held in UPSI. USM 1 performed commendably in all these tourneys and earned a name for itself, especially in light of the fact that this was a relatively new and inexperienced team.
Prita was ranked one of the top ten best speakers in all the tourneys participated. The Anugerah MADUM takes into account any of the best three rankings a speaker has achieved throughout the year.
Following this, USM 1 took part in the 10th All Asians Intervarsity Debating Championships hosted by University Teknologi Malaysia, Johor. This tournament saw participation from various Asian countries ? among others, Singapore, the Phillipines, India, Thailand and Japan.
Team USM 1 had a good run in the tournament and Prita emerged as Champion of the Public Speaking Competition, beating fellow competitors from Malaysia as well as other countries.
These achievements, as well as the overall steady progress of USM English Debating, owes much to the hard work, tireless guidance, motivation and financial support from various quarters ? En. Nazru Hj. Ismail, advisor to USM?s Debate Society, the Student Affairs? Department of USM (Jabatan Hal-Ehwal Pelajar) and of course, Mr. Ian Howell, coach and mentor to the debating team.
USM 1 has done well for the year 2003, but cannot rest on its laurels as it has a long way to go before it can stand on par with other more established debating societies. We hope to see USM English debating reach even greater heights in the near future.
